Our History and Experienced

We specialize in replacement leathers for all types of desks and writing surfaces. Leathers can be send by post and we are happy to supply instructions and advise on fitting. We are a small firm and try to tailor our leathers to suit the customer. There is a standard range of Skivers to suit most needs, but special colours can be hand dyed. All hides are hand dyed to give an excellent finish.

Desktop Leather has a long tradition of supplying quality replacement leathers to the antiques trade and to private customers. Formerly Millers Antiques of Kelvedon, we have been re-leathering desks since the 1950’s. From 2002 we have traded under the name of Desktop Leathers. The Proprietor Charles Cope has a background in furniture restoration having studied at Ryecotwood and West Dean Colleges.

We are always pleased to discuss your needs over the phone, so for friendly service or advice please give us a call, 01245 227 243.

Types of Leather

There are two main types of Leather.

skivers

1. Skivers (pronounced with a long "i" as in Driver) these are thin leathers (up to about 1mm thick) they are the outer split of sheep skin (the inner split is used for chamois leather). The maximum size is about 112cm by 60cm, but skivers can always be joined for larger desks, and once a tooling pattern is embossed over a join, it does not detract from the appearance.

hide

2. Hide this is thicker leather from cowhide. It is tougher and more durable, but also more expensive. Hide can be rolled, giving a smooth finish, or gained showing the natural pattern of the skin. Hides are about 1.5mm thick and so need a slightly deeper rebate. Being from a cow much larger sizes are available and most large desks can be covered in one piece.

Making the Right Choice

Skiver is the most popular choice because it is thinner and less expensive. Hide is much more durable and available in longer sizes, but you need a rebate deep enough to take it.
